Sandra Vásquez de la Horra at Museo Nacional Bellas Artes in Santiago, Chile

We congratulate Sandra Vásquez de la Horra on her solo show at Museo Nacional Bellas Artes (MNBA) in Santiago, Chile

„Los volcanes despiertos“ (The awake volcanoes) is the first solo exhibition at the MNBA of the national artist based in Berlin. The exhibition will be presented between  December 6, 2024, and March 9, 2025, to bring the Chilean public closer to the career of Vásquez de la Horra, recognized for her participation in the 59th Venice Biennale (2022) and for having received the Käthe Kollwitz Prize in 2023. The exhibition brings together around 190 works, including drawings, paintings, and engravings that reflect the richness and versatility of the author’s artistic practice. Since her earliest drawings influenced by her roots in Chile, Vásquez de la Horra has developed a unique style, using paper not only as a surface for her drawings, but as a sculptural element in itself. Her works explore themes such as spirituality, folklore and mythology, incorporating female figures that are transformed into surreal landscapes, mountains and volcanoes.

The exhibition „The awake volcanoes“, curated by Raphael Fonseca was shown earlier this year at the Denver Art Museum. After its stay at the MNBA, the exhibition will travel to the Museo de Arte Latinoamerica in Buenos Aires and to the Institute of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles.
