Next to Baselitz, Markus Lüpertz is a star German painter known around the world. Nevertheless, his multidimensional artistic work encompasses not only painting, but also sculpture, drawing, graphics, poetry, and music. Since the 1960s, Lüpertz has developed – mostly on the basis of groups of art works – a canon of forms and motives that undoubtedly constitutes the foundation of his oeuvre. Whether on canvas or in sculpture, the artist is always focused on pure, free painting. Lüpertz’s works make up his own universe that does not need any reference to the present socio-political reality.
