Markus Lüpertz

*1941 Reichenberg – lives in Berlin, Düsseldorf and Karlsruhe

Next to Baselitz, Markus Lüpertz is a star German painter known around the world. Nevertheless, his multidimensional artistic work encompasses not only painting, but also sculpture, drawing, graphics, poetry, and music. Since the 1960s, Lüpertz has developed – mostly on the basis of groups of art works – a canon of forms and motives that undoubtedly constitutes the foundation of his oeuvre. Whether on canvas or in sculpture, the artist is always focused on pure, free painting. Lüpertz’s works make up his own universe that does not need any reference to the present socio-political reality.

It finds meaning in itself and in its story. Lüpertz made a genuinely art historical contribution from the 1960s with his expressive “dithyrambic painting”, named after an ancient Greek cult song on the god Dionysus, as well as with the monumental still life of “German motifs” in the 1970s. Lüpertz’s first major exhibition was held at Kunsthalle Baden-Baden in 1973. He was professor of painting at the State Academy of Fine Arts Karlsruhe from 1974 to 1986 and from 1988 to 2009 he was rector at the State Academy of Art in Dusseldorf. To date, his works are shown in numerous major museums worldwide.
